Johnny Minkley

Johnny Minkley is an award-winning journalist who has been writing and speaking about videogames for a decade, and playing them for over a quarter of a century. A veteran consumer and business journalist, he has worked on numerous leading magazines and websites, and is a regular pundit across radio and TV and in the national press.

Johnny is currently a games expert for BBC Radio 1, with regular appearances on the Jo Whiley Show, and Editor of Eurogamer TV, producing and presenting video content for Europe's leading independent gaming website, Eurogamer.net.

Expertise & Experience:
He has appeared regularly as a commentator across a wide variety of radio and TV productions, including: BBC Breakfast, BBC News 24, The Culture Show, The Today Programme, Sky News, BBC World Business Report, Bloomberg TV, Reuters and kids’ radio; has been quoted across the national press, from The Sun and The Independent to The Times and The Telegraph; has spoken on gaming at events including the BBC Children's Festival and the National Obesity Forum Annual Conference; hosted the 2009 BAFTA Videogames Lecture and presented BAFTA's backstage coverage of the 2010 Video Games Awards.

Johnny has for the past five and a half years presented a monthly games segment on the Jo Whiley Show on BBC Radio 1, picking up the Best Gaming Broadcast prize at the 2007 Games Media Awards for his work with the network. He wrote and presented an hour-long videogames special which was broadcast on Radio 1 on January 1st, 2009.

Johnny fronts Eurogamer TV on a full-time basis, the video production arm of leading European gaming site Eurogamer.net, where he writes, presents and produces original content on the latest games, and interviews everyone from popstars to politicians. He also writes extensively for Eurogamer.net and respected international business publication GamesIndustry.biz, contributing news, reviews, features and commentary.

He has also written extensively on children's gaming for titles including National Geographic Kids, KiCK! and Kraze Club, and has previously presented games coverage on Nuts TV and Today On 3 Live, the first daily entertainment show on mobile phones.

Beginning his career as a games reviewer on consumer magazines including CVG and Nintendo Official Magazine, Johnny moved online as a daily news writer, eventually becoming editor of the then-leading European consumer destination ComputerAndVideogames.com.

After two years at the helm of CVG Online, he switched to trade to take up the editorship of the UK games industry’s weekly business publication, MCV, steering the magazine through the first major redesign in its seven-year history, while serving a worldwide trade readership with retail, development, and publisher news, comment and analysis.

In 2010 Johnny became Vice President of SpecialEffect, a charity dedicated to helping severely disabled children enjoy videogames through the use of cutting-edge technology.

Johnny has played thousands of games and owned every major console ever launched. He has very sore eyes.

When not playing games, Johnny likes to play the guitar, read up on social psychology and obsess endlessly over The Beatles.
