Best Budget Option (4GB iPod nano) |
 |
Get all the best features of a full-scale iPod, plus enough storage to hold up to 1,000 songs in a tiny colourful gadget and all for under £130. It's a great deal and makes the iPod nano our pick as the best budget iPod in Apple's line up. It is also by far and away the best option for kids. (Compare Prices) |

| One step up in size from the iPod shuffle, the nano is the smallest player to feature a screen. This 1.5in colour display opens up its functions quite a bit, giving you access to the easy-to-use iPod interface and allowing you to select the songs you want to hear onscreen. With this version you can even use the scroll wheel and centre select button to search for songs alphabetically. (Compare Prices) |
Great Value |
Although it's bigger than the shuffle, the nano is still tiny measuring just 90x40x6.5mm and weighing only 40g, much smaller than the iPod mini it replaced. The 4GB version harks back to the mini in more ways than one as you can choose the colour of your finish – it comes in silver, green, blue and pink - one to match most colour schemes.
The 4GB model represents the best value for money in the iPod line up for a couple of reasons. Firstly, despite the low price you get the aforementioned screen, and secondly, the generous 4GB capacity, which allows you to store up to 1,000 songs. Indeed it offers such good value for money, technology analyst Neil Strother says "It's hard to see how [Apple] makes any money on the 4GB [nano]". (Compare Prices) |
Nice and Simple |
Like the shuffle it uses solid state memory to store music, so you won't encounter any skipping. If you prefer to select your playlist for the gym, then the nano can step in to the role of action iPod and with a 24-hour battery life, we defy you to outlast it.
Experts greeted the launch of the nano with enthusiasm. It won online iPod guide Playlist's best new iPod award last year with editor in chief Chris Breen describing it as the coolest iPod "on the planet", mixing "the best features of the shuffle, mini and colour iPod".
Synchronisation can be to a Mac or a PC and is via a dock connected to the USB port. It's easy as pie to download all your music to the player and songs are managed on your computer using Apple's iTunes software. (Compare Prices) |
